“Heartbreaking and heartbreaking. 5 motocross bikes and ATVs stolen from Stamford family’s locked storage unit

As Stamford Police investigate a break-in at a local warehouse, theft victims turn to the public for help in locating their stolen motocross bikes and ATVs.

“It’s very upsetting and heartbreaking,” said Evelyn Segura, whose family rented a storage unit at Extra Space Storage on West Main Street for three years without any issues. But on Friday morning, Segura’s husband showed up to find their lock had been cut.

“His mind is racing. He opens the storage unit and all of our bikes are gone,” Segura recalled.

Five in all: a red Honda CRF450X, a green SYX MOTO, an orange 2023 KTM and two Yamaha Banshee ATVs, one yellow and one blue. Segura said the cost was more than $35,000, but the loss was more than money. She recently took out a loan to give the 2023 KTM as a gift to her husband.

“It’s something I bought him for Father’s Day, so it has sentimental value,” Segura explained. The same goes for one of the blue Yamaha Banshees, which her husband spent over a year repairing and restoring.

“People were asking him to sell it, and he was like, ‘No. It’s for my son when he grows up,'” she told News 12. “He was going to pass it on to him, and now we have nothing.”

Segura said Extra Space Storage security cameras captured the theft just before 3 a.m. Thursday. Staff told him that a white sprinter van carrying four men arrived and drove straight to their unit. No other units were hit. Segura also said that the door to Extra Space Storage was supposed to close at 10 p.m., but had been broken for over a month.

In response to a News 12 inquiry into this matter, Extra Space Storage issued a statement:

This was an unusual, targeted burglary of a unit. We work with local authorities and help them as much as possible, including providing them with security footage. Safety and security is a priority for Extra Space Storage and we will review what happened and work with our suppliers to improve.

“We’re just a little scared that these bikes are already on the street and someone has already bought them without knowing where they came from,” Segura said. She told News 12 that she hopes by sharing their story someone might recognize one of the bikes or mountain bikes and do the right thing.

“Please help us,” she said. Segura added that there was a cash reward for returning their stuff. Anyone with information is asked to call Stamford Police.
