Riding dirtbikes is fun for all the obvious reasons. It involves speed, jumps, big bikes, and dirt. What’s not to like? However, many beginning dirtbikers do not know where to start. The amount of equipment needed and available is often confusing. Where to begin? Hopefully this article will help get you off on the right foot. Do not break the bank on your first bike. New dirtbikes can be expensive, but there are plenty of hardly used dirtbikes available. Whenever someone takes up the sport someone leaves. They often choose to get rid of their equipment. You can find a serviceable beginner bike for relatively cheap.
Look for a used midsized two stroke dirtbike. It is not a matter of if you will crash but when. You want a bike that is easy to pick up. Doing 450 lb deadlights is no fun. Well, maybe it is for you, but not for me. Light bikes are also more maneuverable. This is something you will grow to appreciate as you learn.
2 stroke engines are also simpler than their 4 stroke cousins. You will be working on your bike a lot if you stick with dirtbiking, especially if you buy used. The 2 stroke engine is easier to learn and work on. Before you are done you will know your bike in and out.
That brings us to the next step in beginning to learn about dirtbikes. You need to purchase a good manual that explains in detail how to identify and fix any problems that might occur. A good manual will prove invaluable.
Next up is riding gear. At the bare minimum you should purchase a quality helmet and set of gloves, but when it comes to protection more is better. You will fall. Starting out, the more you have between you and the ground the better. Buy a full kit including forearm guards, boots, shin guards, and a shell and you will not regret it.
Now that you are fully outfitted it is time to go riding. It is best to ride with other more experienced riders. Being around more experienced riders will certainly shorten the amount of time it will take you to become competent. Plus riding in a group is more fun than riding alone. Most dirtbike riders will be happy to help you improve. Find a local club and take your bike out. Let the other riders know you are just starting out and you will be surprised at how helpful they are.
